Q: Can I come to the festival even if I don’t know anything about fly fishing?

A: Absolutely! Our goal is to introduce the joys of the quiet sport to as many folks as possible. We offer classes for everyone, from beginner to fly fishing veteran.

Q: May I bring my dog?

A: Unfortunately, only “working dogs” that are assisting attendees with some sort of disability will be allowed on festival grounds, and they must be on a leash. Animal owners assume ALL liability for their animals while visiting the festival.

Q: I don’t fish (or I’m bringing someone who doesn’t fish). What’s in it for me?

A: The festival offers plenty for non-anglers to see and do. Watch fly tying and casting demonstrations, observe wildlife artists, learn how to paddle a kayak, or simply watch the river float lazily along while listening to live music and sipping some fine Virginia wine.

Q: Can I bring my children?

A: The festival is a family-friendly event, so we strongly encourage you to bring your kids. All children 16 and under are admitted free of charge with a paying adult. Be sure to have them visit the Children Only Catch and Release Trout Pool.

Q: Can I fish when I come? Will I need a license?

A: Plenty of great catch-and-release trout fishing exists right on the festival grounds. This year we hope to have the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Department on hand to sell fishing licenses.

Q: Are half of all festival proceeds really earmarked for conservation work?

A: Yes, these funds are deposited with the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival Foundation and will be used for future conservation work on the river. The remaining funds are used to promote the following year’s event. The rock structures you see near the bridge in town were purchased and placed with festival funds and with the help of the Shenandoah Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
