This year, we are offering paid casting classes each day. Each class will last approximately 2 hours. Students may bring their own rods or borrow their gear if necessary. Once you have confirmed your reservation in the class, we will work with you to arrange for your gear.
Students will be taught in a group setting outside, so dress accordingly. The cost of the class is $75 and includes admission to the festival for the day of the class. Sorry, no refunds will be given unless the class is canceled. No changing of slots will occur unless students find their own replacement. There is a limit of 10 students per class. Free Casting Classes / Women-Only Casting Classes
Free group casting classes and women-only casting classes will be conducted throughout the weekend of the festival at the Orvis Instructional Tent. Students are encouraged to register for free walk-up classes or to discuss their individual casting needs with Orvis staff members. Students can bring their own rods or borrow rods from Orvis. Group casting classes with a limit of 15 students per class will be offered throughout the day and will last about an hour to an hour and a half. Individual instruction on a first-come, first-served basis will also be available as time and circumstances dictate.
Free Lectures and Classes
Many people find fly fishing intimidating and confusing. We want to make fly fishing fun and educational for everyone. We are confident that if we can teach you to cast, read the water, and catch fish, you can pick up the Latin names of the fish and the flies on your own.
Expert fly anglers—authors, guides, industry reps, and others—will present free seminars throughout the weekend in our speaker tents named after Virginia rivers. We encourage attendees to take advantage of as many classes as possible and to ask as many questions as they can. We hand-pick our instructors, many of whom have had to wait years for an opportunity to speak here. Speakers for the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival all agree on one thing: Our job is to share knowledge of the sport—not just show it.
